Durante milenios, los agricultores desempeñaron simultáneamente el rol de productores y seleccionadores hasta que, en el siglo XVIII, surgieron las primeras casas de semillas y la figura de los mejoradores. Durante muchos años, su trabajo se basó en la experimentación y el método de prueba y error, pero con el desarrollo de la genética en el siglo XX, lograron un respaldo científico que impulsó significativamente sus avances.
